We went back to Johannesburg for an overnight before flying to Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve near Krueger National Park. We flew in a darling 18-seat plane. The airline – Federal Air – has a private terminal with first class lounges and personalized service throughout – no tickets necessary. They simply have your name on a list. Honestly. Can you imagine in this day and age – no security, no ticket, no nothing. A truly enjoyable air travel experience. I haven’t had one of those in a while.
The first afternoon we went on our first game drive and saw four out of the Big Five – Cape Buffalo, elephant, white rhino and a leopard – right after he killed a big impala. We also saw a “dazzle” of zebra (the collective term). Sunset out on the veldt – with the sun setting on one horizon and the moon rising over the other. We had champagne and then – get this – climbed back into the safari vehicle WITH our glasses and carried on through the bush in the dark. Magic does not begin to describe it. Happy campers were we.
And we didn’t just look at the animals, either. So far I’ve eaten kudu, ostrich, impala and lots of champagne. All good.
There are no words. And, if you are worried about not having life’s little luxuries, let me tell you about Sabi Sabi… unbelievable service and food, magnificent suites with indoor and outdoor showers, private patios with big chairs for viewing game from your room, (plus they have Cuban cigars, and in the room you get a bottle of brandy). Your own guide and tracker in a land rover (now THAT’s off roading!) with no more than 7 people.
Tomorrow they wake us at 5:30 for a 6 a.m. drive. The animals are not stupid – they sleep during the heat of the day, so it’s early morning for us in order to have any chance of seeing them. Not a complaint – anyone who has the opportunity and doesn’t take it needs a slap upside the head and then some. All we can keep saying is Oh My! Africa!
