Home Edition #6

Are you still there? Or did you pack up and leave for a change of scenery?

Hey, it could happen. People are starting to get antsy and some are ready to dip their toe in the waters of travel again. Most, if not all – whether because they feel safer or because most international destinations are blocked to Americans at the moment – are starting out with shorter trips to close-to-home destinations. Places they can drive to without an overnight but far enough away (even 30 miles at this point would be far enough away) to feel like a real vacation. It’s summer, after all, and we are just not built for staying home when the sun shines and the road calls us.

We feel you. We are having trouble digesting the fact that 8 to 14-hour plane trips are off the table for now. That dipping our toes will not mean in the Mediterranean, Ionian or Adriatic. And it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting Down Under as planned this fall. We’re sad. We’re frustrated. But we will not give up, we will not give in. And our love affair with the world – and getting to know it – will never fade.

So, let’s dream and then plan to discover our own backyards. Those places you have, until now, put off until later. Check out our Facebook page to see things we love about places near us. And please add a few of your own!

We love lists and we’ve been making some of places we love here in the U.S.
Looking for a private home on a beautiful desert estate for just you and your family? Check. A luxury mountain retreat with individual cabins (no elevators or massive lobbies required)? Got it. Beachfront private houses in Cape Cod? We know where to find them.

And if you’re not ready to go now, we really do understand. Traveling in the time of COVID is definitely NOT for everyone. But, we are looking forward to a future where we can once again board a big silver bird and take off to far-flung, exotic and thrilling places out there ready to be discovered. We are planning for 2021 right now. River ships are already filling up 12-14 months in advance. African safaris have always needed 8-12 months lead time. So if you, like we, are optimistic about the future of travel, now is actually a good time to start planning. And then there will be plenty of time for that sweetest of activities… DREAMING.

We Just Love This – A Flower Flash
Lewis Miller Designs created their Flower Flash as a gift to the people of New York.
On any given day you may walk down a street and see a trashcan, postbox, garage door, fire hydrant or even one of the city’s famed hot dog carts — all bedecked by stupendous floral arrangements. They climb signs, fill fountains and garland statues. In keeping with flash tradition, there is no notice of where they will strike next. We just hope we are lucky enough to see one on a future visit to NYC.

The Next Time We Go To: London
We will be drinking Buckingham Palace gin. Many of its citrus and herbal notes are sourced from botanicals gathered in the Buckingham Palace Garden and – get this – hand-picked (probably not by the Queen, though). Please note: this item is only available for delivery to addresses in the U.K. — which is why we can’t wait to get back

We Love The Moth
One thing we know for sure: when we listen to The Moth Radio Hour live or The Moth podcast we will be thoroughly entertained. The Moth’s beauty is in its simplicity; it features true stories told live on stage without scripts, notes, props, or accompaniment. Each story mixes humorous, heartbreaking, and poignant tales that captivate, surprise, and delight with their honesty, bravery and humor. People have seen me driving my car laughing hysterically and then wiping tears from my face. Why? I was listening to The Moth.
